The Story of Diorama

Watch Now

Diorama is the story of a woman returning home to uncover the details of her past and explore her mother's history. Throughout this journey, we discover that the main character shares a profound creative connection with her mother, which has influenced

her life even after her mother's passing. The narrative will be

conveyed through ballet and aerial silks performances, enhanced by

kinetic lighting fixtures that together create a unique experience.

This journey is inspired by long drives through Eastern

Kentucky and the old homes that serve as time capsules of a bygone era, intriguing the mind and enticing the senses.

Gary Wright

Creator & Composer

My name is Gary Wright, and I am currently in my 15th year of film and television production here in Kentucky. I grew up in Eastern Kentucky, making my way through Lexington. From a young age, artistic expression has always been a significant part of my life. I started by playing the saxophone in the band before switching my major to film. Throughout this journey, I have continually sought the perfect marriage of visual art and music, which I have found in Diorama.

I prioritize my love for art and artistic expression above all else. Through projects like these, I hope to empower other artists to overcome any hesitation in pursuing their artistic aspirations.

Choreographers Statement

When Gary asked me to adapt this piece, I was struck by this quality of softness to the story. I often find myself using choreography and dance to dig, to unearth truths that lie beyond and underneath what words can communicate; this often results in work that is quite sharp, intense, and dark - figuratively and literally. Yet, what Gary has shown me in this piece which I felt was imperative in adapting it to live stage choreography is this story with a beating heart and emotional depth to it... with this profound lightness and softness. I made so many discoveries through this process, through working with these amazing artists you will see onstage tonight, and I hope that you too will be able to connect to the soft parts of yourself.

It is the duty of art to reflect life, and it seems like all of the noise, fire, and fury of life now is what life has become, but maybe, just maybe, what lies underneath all of this overwhelm is a soft and light existence: that we all can rediscover, and reconnect to.

Thank you, for coming tonight, supporting local art, and allowing yourself the chance to sit in community and celebrate the softness of life.
